A cleaner energy for transport

While heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses account for 3% of vehicles on Irish roads, they generate 20% of Ireland's transport emissions.  While CNG can reduce a HGV's emissions by up to 22%, bioCNG can turn it into a carbon neutral vehicle. BioCNG is carbon neutral biomethane gas which is compressed to fit into a vehicle's tank and is available for HGVs in the same way as CNG.

€750,000 has been allocated to accelerate sustainable transport​. Grants up to €10,000 per vehicle are available, funding a maximum of 40% of the cost difference between diesel and gas vehicles, provided this difference exceeds €25,000. 

CNG and bioCNG are established global sources of transport fuel, with almost 2 million CNG vehicles in Europe.

Both can be compressed to fit in the fuel tank of gas-powered vehicles. Studies show they are particularly well-suited to deliver the high performance and distance requirements of HGVs and buses. The highest emissions savings realised with CNG and bioCNG are achieved under specific conditions, loads and vehicles - particularly the long-haul drive cycles - making them the ideal fuels for decarbonising Ireland's heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and bus fleets. While electricity is a proven alternate fuel for cars, electric solutions are not a viable option for use in heavy goods commercial vehicles, however CNG and bioCNG are, and are being used by fleet operators throughout Europe.

Establishing a sustainable renewable gas industry in Ireland will not only help meet Ireland's climate action targets and enhance Ireland's security of supply, but also support agriculture and the economy.
